Crushed: Giant Ant | Rule 03
Ah, fall. The season of beautifully colored leaves, pumpkin-spiced everything, and...animation?
Yeah, I don’t know what it is—maybe the mass migration indoors?—but every fall in Vancouver there seems to be a million animation events. This year so far I’ve been to Kooks & Legends and Eadweard as part of VIFF, an inspiring talk on story by Jorge Guiterrez (super macho director of El Tigre, etc.), and (soon) the annual Spark Animation conference, and the Animation Show of Shows. All this animated stuff fresh in my mind means my inspired-by-animation radar is way up, so I figured I’d share some short clips up here once in a while to inspire you, too. So please, behold:
Yes! So rad. I came across this little clip a few weeks ago by Vancouver’s own Giant Ant, who have been inspiring me for a few years after Emily Carr picked their brains online (because they’re fellow alumni)! After watching this cute animated dude, I was totally bummed that Rule 01 and 02 don’t exist yet. I searched and searched! The stunning, want-to-reach-out-and-touch-it art direction makes me happy, as does the character (designer by Lucas Brooking). It’s based on one of the studio’s three operating rules: “Don’t miss a deadline, Don’t be a jerk, and Put love into your work.” I can’t wait to see more, frankly. In the meantime, last year I remember being super-psyched when I saw their reel, so if you want to see more, you should watch it here, too. Thanks for the inspiration, Giant Ant!
